A coalition of U.S. lawmakers, led by Congressman Michael Cloud, is demanding a permanent ban on the development of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The group warns that CBDC implementation could lead to unconstitutional financial surveillance, jeopardizing Americans' financial freedom. Their concerns were formally outlined in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader John Thune.

The push coincides with the Senate's review of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act (HR 6644), which includes a temporary prohibition on Federal Reserve CBDC issuance. Legislators argue this measure doesn't go far enough, seeking instead an outright ban. The debate highlights growing tensions between technological innovation in finance and privacy protections.

Republican Representative Ralph Norman publicly endorsed the movement, tweeting: 'Americans deserve financial freedom, not government-controlled money.' The controversy emerges as global CBDC development accelerates, with the U.S. position potentially influencing broader cryptocurrency market dynamics.
